This version of the "Choices" system

Please be aware that this system has been modified from the normal version to enable it to run on an old iPad tablet computer. The ability to choose what to do should work but there are likely to be issues such as some images not loading on the "websites" it leads you to.

Getting going

The iPad has a power button just over the top edge on the right. Click it to wake the device up if the screen is blank. Then touch the screen where it asks you to and slide your finger to the right. If you get no "life" you probably need to use the charger for an hour or two. It has a long connector which plugs in at the bottom of the iPad.

When you have finished you should click the power button to put the device to sleep.

To help get you going on using the "World Wide Web" (part of the "Internet") we will use a website called "Choices". It takes you through a list of things you might like to do or see. Running "Choices", like all websites, requires a "web browser". This is a computer program for viewing websites.

The iPad uses a browser called "Safari". If, having switched on, you do not see the word "Choices" at the top of the screen click on the button at the middle bottom (on the white margin) until you see the word "Safari" with a compass picture ("icon") above it on the bottom left of the actual screen. Click on that to start ("open") Safari.

If you now see the word Choices centred at the top, fine. Otherwise look for it on a "tab" labelled Choices at the top and click that. Otherwise tap in the top rectangular white "window" and using the keyboard that appears type "choices.rural-web.uk" (without the quotes) and then tapthe "Go" key on the right of the keyboard.

Think of "Choices" as being like walking in through the door of a library. As in a library you can read a news paper, find books of all sorts and probably find a help desk, so the Internet has similar offerings.

All being well "Choices" will present you with a suggestion of something you may like to do. To do that, tap on the blue text "button". To try somethink else, tap on "Do somthing else".

Why use "Choices"?

Well, you don't need to but computers can be confusing. Our aim is to help people with little or no experience of computers and the Internet to get going in finding information and hopefully enjoy doing so. If you have any comments or would like us to add additional "choices" please tell whoever introduced you to the system. No promises about when or if we will be able to help.

A bit about privacy

We cannot promise that no one else will see or find out what you do on this computer as it is in theory possible that someone could peek at what you send and receive.

Tabs

You will have seen the note about "tabs" under each choice you were offered. Each tab has a label at the top with a description in it. The one currently in use has a white background. Sometimes the description is too long to fit but if you move the cursor over it you will see it all. Also when you do this you will see an '''X''' on the left. Clicking that closes the tab and you are then presented with the previous one used. When you click on a choice a new tab with the chosen website opens on the right. Closing your choice takes you back to the Choices tab.

The choices

We hope the choices offered will be useful but suggestions for changes or additions are welcome. However once you are familiar with visiting websites you may like to try opening a new tab by using the '''+''' on thr right of those already present. Then type the link to that in the address bar (the line starting with '''<  >  <<  >>''').

That is all for now, though more notes will probably get added.
